Through College Now, qualified students get an early introduction to the college environment by taking a course at the John Jay College campus. This experience helps students build the academic skills that are necessary to be successful in college.

There will be one required pre-trip orientation on July 7, 2025. Check out our event calendar for more information and RSVP here.
Make sure to attend your Goodbye Group to receive your metro cards and final trip information, and to meet the other Summer Searchers who will be traveling with the same program!
About the Program
Culture and Writing Course
Explore and analyze current events through original writings in a supportive, college environment.

This program will explore social activism and critical consciousness through writing. You will get to analyze, write and discuss social justice scripts, practice your public speaking, and work through current events with personal writings and research. This program is designed to give you an opportunity to create an anthology book of writing to be published at the end of the course, and to prepare for college level analysis and expression.
Programming will be July 8 - July 24, M-TH, 1-3pm.
Students who participate in this program will receive a certificate of completion and a $300 stipend. This program includes a $300 stipend at the end of the 3-week program. In order to receive the FULL stipend amount, you MUST demonstrate a commitment to participate fully and actively EVERY DAY of the program. You MUST show up on time, ready to work. Students who miss more than 4 hours, will see a $25 reduction on their stipend per 4 hours missed.

This program will be NYC Summer Searchers only. It’s a great opportunity for you to meet and get to know other students in our program!

Phones and other electronic devices are able to be used. If you need a computer for class and/or writing, talk to your mentor! Summer Search can potentially loan you one.

This program will take place in New York City. Summer Search will provide metro cards for each day of programming! You will receive these at your Goodbye Group.

We recommend having $35-100 for personal spending. You may want to buy snacks! We definitely recommend packing a lunch.

There is no packing list necessary for this program. Be sure to ask your mentor or the College Now team for advice on what to wear/bring to your class.
